Skálholt Festival 2026
Sat., 18 Jul.
Skálholt Cathedral
The Skálholt Festival will be held the weekend of July 18 - 19, 2026.
The title of the festival will be "Clear Proclamation in the Childhood of Faith." There will also be an opportunity to examine and discuss the role of Ísleifur, whether he is called a missionary bishop on his father's estate in Skálholt or the first bishop of the see in Iceland.
The program is being finalized, but it is set with an outdoor mass at Þorlákssæti on Saturday morning and on the same day there will be a festival concert in the afternoon and possibly a symposium in the morning. There will be a children's program, an archaeological school and a children's mini-pilgrimage. The pilgrimage will be to Skálholt a few days before as usual. On Sunday, July 19, there will be an organ concert before noon, but the festival mass with a large number of participants is at 2 p.m. and the festival program at 4 p.m. The program includes holiday sermons and various news mixed with unique music by the Skálholt Choir with organ and piano. Everyone is then invited to church coffee offered by Skálholtsstaðar between mass and the festival program. The weather has usually been good at the festival, so the coffee has been in the garden no less than inside the restaurant Hvönn in Skálholt. The festival has always been well attended and there have been many good church people and all those who love the country's culture.
